Pediatric Ear Surgery

Children are unique in the ear diseases that they develop and the unique nature of their diseases requires a personalized approach to each patient. At UC Irvine we perform one of the highest volumes of pediatric ear surgeries by a single surgeon.

Anesthesia for pediatric patients requires an understanding of how children differ, anatomically, psychologically, physiologically and pharmacologically, from adults, and how these differences affect the anesthesiologist’s ability to maintain homeostasis and provide necessary operative conditions during surgery and the post-anesthetic recovery period. The pediatric anesthesiology service at UC Irvine is comprised of board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists who are experts at treating the pediatric patients.

Common procedures performed on pediatric patients at UC Irvine include:

• BAHA implant surgery
• Cholesteatoma surgery (removal of the skin cyst/growth from behind the ear drum)
• Cochlear implantation (device to restore hearing) - minimally invasive approach
• Ear atresia repair (rebuilding the ear canal)
• Ear tube placement
• Ossicular reconstruction/stapedectomy (Hearing reconstruction surgery)
• Pediatric Skull base surgery
• Tympanoplasty (repair of a perforated ear drum)
• Tympanoplasty with Mastoidectomy (repair of a perforated ear drum and removal of the infection from behind the ear)
• Surgery for facial paralysis
