Christian S. Betz, MD, PhD

Having acquired his medical degree at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, Dr. Betz received his specialty training at Munich University Hospital. Following a fellowship in Maxillofacial Surgery at University College London Hospital in London, UK, and in head & neck surgery at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, Dr. Betz has been faculty member at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Munich University Hospital until 2017, when he took the position as vice chair at the ENT Department at Tubingen University Hospital. Since 2018, he is chair and clinical head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). Dr. Betz’s primary clinical interests are head and neck surgery, paranasal sinus surgery and anterior skull base surgery. Dr. Betz is actively involved in numerous scientific activities, including his role in initiating and leading a research group at UKE on “Innovative Optical Diagnostics”, and he’s received several national grants for research purposes.

Arne Böttcher, MD, PhD

Having acquired his medical degree at the University of Rostock, Germany, Dr. Böttcher undertook his specialty training at the University Medical Centers of Rostock (“Otto Körner Clinic”) and Hamburg (UKE). Following a three-year period at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin as a consultant where he was awarded with the “Otto-Körner-Preis”, he joined the faculty at the ORL department of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in 2016. Scientific projects include clinical studies on hypoglossal nerve stimulation, neck dissection for laryngectomy, and laryngeal voice restoration. Dr. Böttcher’s main clinical interests are obstructive sleep apnea and head and neck surgery.

Mark Praetorius, MD, PhD

Dr. Praetorius attended medical school at Freiburg University, Gemany. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Saarland Medical Center. He is board certified in Otolaryngology/Head-&-Neck Surgery. For 15 years, he was head of the Division of Otology at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Heidelberg Medical Center. Dr. Praetorius is Professor for clinical and scientific otology at the University of Hamburg Medical Center (UKE).  He is particularly interested in restoration of hearing and balance functions. Dr. Praetorius has co-authored more than 70 publications in peer reviewed medical journals.

Anna Sophie Hoffmann, MD

Dr. Hoffmann earned her medical degree from the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany. She then completed residency at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and the University Medical Center in Lübeck, Germany. The focus of Dr. Hoffmann’s clinical practice is complex and revision sinus surgery for difficult and challenging sinusitis, such as nasal polyps, aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease, and allergic fungal rhinosinusitis. In November 2018 she was board certified as an Allergy specialist. She is actively involved in the multidisciplinary treatment of those patients and has given several presentations at national meetings. In addition, she trains medical students and residents advance in their clinical endeavors.

Sophia Häußler, MD

Dr. Häußler attended medical School at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, and achieved the doctorate of medicine in the Department of Radiology. She undertook her specialty training at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and held a position in the Senior faculty since 2021. Her main interests clinically, surgically and scientifically is Otology and Neurotology as well as Hearing implants. She is working on her PhD in the latter field. Dr. Häußler has joined the team at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in early 2022.

Katharina Stölzel, MD, PhD

Having acquired her medical degree at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, Dr. Stölzel undertook her specialty training at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin as a consultant, and joined the faculty at the ORL department of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in 2021. Scientific projects include clinical studies on regenerative medicine, neuro-otology and oncology. Dr. Stölzel’s main clinical interests are head and neck surgery and hereditary hemorrhagic teleangiectasia.

Henrike Zech, MD

Dr. Zech received her medical degree in 2009 after attending medical school at University Medical Center Saarbrücken/Lübeck/Caen (France). She completed residency at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in 2021. The focus of Dr. Zech’s work is translational head and neck oncology. During several clinician scientist fellowships at the University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCCH), she implemented patient-derived head and neck tumor models and succeeded in identifying radiobiological characteristics of HPV-positive OPSCC and novel potential radiosensitizers for HNSCC. Dr. Zech is experienced in the curative and palliative medical treatment of head and neck tumor patients and supervises clinical studies for HNSCC. She has given numerous presentations in translational and clinical head and neck oncology. As senior lecturer of the ORL department, she digitalized and re-arranged teaching classes during the Covid Pandemic.

Aline Mathieu, MD

Dr. Mathieu acquired her medical degree at the University of Hamburg, Germany and started her specialty training at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) where she completed residency in 2022. Her main clinical interests are Otology and Hearing implants. Scientifically, she is actively involved in the research group on “Innovative Optical Diagnostics”.

Benjamin Becker, MD

Dr. Becker received his medical degree in 2018 after attending medical school at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and University of Hamburg, Germany. He received his specialty training at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) where he completed residency in 2023. His primary clinical focus is rhinological surgery including paranasal sinus surgery and rhinoplasty, as well as the management of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and the field of allergic rhinitis. Scientific projects include clinical studies on early detection of HPV-driven oropharyngeal cancer and development of computer aided diagnostic systems for automated classification of paranasal anomalies.

Jördis Eden, MD

Having acquired her medical degree at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany, Dr. Eden received her specialty training at Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. Since 2021, she is junior faculty member of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). Her clinical focus is endoscopic sinus surgery as well as the management of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and the field of allergic rhinitis. Scientifically, she is involved in the research group on “Innovative Optical Diagnostics”.

Rupert Stadlhofer, MD

Having acquired his medical degree at the Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg, Austria, Dr. Stadlhofer began his specialty training at the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at University Hospital Salzburg, Austria. After two years, Dr. Stadlhofer moved to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), where he finished his specialty training in 2021 and joined the faculty. Here he focuses on rhinologic surgery including minimally invasive endoscopic nasal and sinus surgery as well es rhinoplasty. Furthermore, Dr. Stadlhofer is actively involved in the research group “Innovative Optical Diagnostics”.

Lukas Wittig, MD

Dr. Wittig acquired his medical degree at the University of Luebeck, Germany and started his ENT specialty training at the University Hospital Essen. Following a one-year training in Intensive Care Medicine and Pulmonology at the University Hospital Luebeck, Dr. Wittig completed his ENT specialty training at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in early 2022. His main clinical interests are head and neck surgery and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Wittig is actively involved in the research group “Innovative Optical Diagnostics” at the UKE focusing on Optical Coherence Tomography and Hyperspectral Imaging.

Lukas Fiedler, MD

Dr. Fiedler received his medical degree from the Medical University Graz in Austria. During his studies he participated in an international rotation program at the EWHA Medical center in Seoul/Korea. His residency was at Klinikum Mutterhaus der Borromäerinnen Trier, Germany, where he finished his training in ENT and Head and Neck surgery. He completed an EAFPS short term fellowship for facial and reconstructive plastic surgery in Newcastle upon Tyne/UK, where he broadened his reconstructive repertoire. In addition to his surgical practice, he obtained his doctoral degree at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany, and is board certified in Medical Quality Management. In October 2021 he joined the ORL department of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf with a focus on the treatment of malignant facial skin lesions and clinical trials regarding different tracheostomy techniques..
