UCI Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program

The residency program within the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery here at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine provides comprehensive training to our residents. Emphasizing a hands-on surgical education, graded autonomy in clinical decision-making, exploration of research opportunities, and the importance of lifelong education, we aim to deliver training in a supportive, friendly atmosphere. Our faculty are dynamic, from a variety of backgrounds, and all share a passion for clinical excellence and teaching.

Five years in duration, the program has a very strong background and history of outstanding performance on the American Board of Otolaryngology examination. The following subspecialty areas are included in training:

  • Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (including facial trauma)
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Laryngology
  • Otology and Neurotology
  • Otolaryngic Allergy and Immunology
  • Pediatric Otolaryngology
  • Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery
  • Sleep Surgery
  • Audiology
  • Speech Pathology

In addition, interdisciplinary interaction with such specialties as neurosurgery, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, general surgery, trauma, head and neck pathology, and neuroradiology are an integral part of the content and planning of the training program. Our residents graduate well-trained and ideally positioned either to enter further training in the fellowship of their choice or to start practicing general otolaryngology.

Dr. Cameron Heilbronn, Class of 2020

"Our faculty are truly great at graded autonomy. By the time I was a chief, I was leading juniors through nearly every type of ENT surgery. This has made me a confident and competent surgeon, and I feel great about going into practice after finishing my training here at UCI."

Dr. Catherine Merna, Class of 2022

"On interviewing at UCI, the friendliness and camaraderie of the residents, engagement of the attendings, and impressive surgical training clinched it for me. Our program also exposes one to a variety of practice settings, allowing one to start planning their own future practice early in residency. Residents that graduate from our program are capable surgeons and physicians. Our faculty are supportive and will wholeheartedly assist you in pursuing any fellowship or career that you choose.”
