Zenker’s Diverticulum
Zenker’s Diverticulum is a term used to describe a
pouching that occurs in the back of an individuals
throat. This change, which often occurs as patients
age, is due to hyperactivity of a patients
cricopharyngeus muscle. While a Zenker’s Diverticulum
can be asymptomatic, patient’s may also complain of the
following symptoms:

Diverticulum:
Regurgitation of
food contents, hours after a meal
Difficulty
swallowing
Pain with
swallowing
Difficulty
tolerating diets of varying consistencies
Coughing
Choking on foods
“Lump in the
throat” sensation
Diagnosis
Patients with dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, are
examined by a physician. A swallowing study, which is
performed in coordination with radiology department, is
often ordered for evaluation.
